[PlayStation®2 system] Updated 05/06/2013

Use Diagnose and Repair your internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation 2) (HDD) only if you've received an on-screen message indicating that there are errors on your HDD.

IMPORTANT: Note that data on your HDD containing errors might be erased during this procedure. Diagnosis and repairs can take a long time to complete depending on the volume and location of data stored on your HDD.

To use the Diagnose and Repair HDD feature:

  1. Insert the HDD Utility Disc into the PlayStation 2 and close the disc tray.

  2. A screen will appear listing controls for navigating the HDD Utility Disc. Press the Xbutton to bypass this screen.

  3. Highlight Diagnose and Repair HDD on the main menu and press the Xbutton.

  4. Highlight Diagnose HDD or Diagnose and Repair HDD and press the Xbutton:

    • Diagnose HDD This option identifies errors on the HDD, but does not fix them.
      1. If you choose this option, press the right arrow button to advance to the page labeled "Diagnosing the HDD 2/2."
      2. Press the Xbutton to begin the diagnosis and then press the Xbutton again to confirm your choice.
      3. A screen will appear, indicating the progress of the HDD diagnostic.
NOTE: Do not turn off your PlayStation®2, open the disc tray, or remove the HDD from your PlayStation®2 until the procedure is completed.
