[PlayStation®2 system] Updated 09/25/2013

If you are experiencing picture problems on the PlayStation 2 system, try these troubleshooting options:

If there is no picture on the screen

  • Make sure the PlayStation 2and TV (and VCR, if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU Adaptor, or S VIDEO cable.

  • Visually check to make sure the AC power cord is not damaged.

  • Make sure you have selected the correct video input and channel on your TV or VCR.

  • Check that the disc is inserted correctly, with the label side up.

If the screen is bouncing

  • Some TVs and monitors have difficulty displaying games, creating a bouncing effect.

  • Try installing the PlayStation 2 system on a different TV. There might be compatibility problems with the PlayStation 2 system and older model TVs.

If picture noise appears

  • Make sure the PlayStation 2  and TV (and VCR if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU adaptor, or S VIDEO cable.

  • Visually check to make sure the AC power cord is not damaged.

  • Make sure you have selected the correct video input and channel on your TV or VCR.

  • The disc may need cleaning. To clean the disc: Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores. If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can use a dry, lint-free cloth.
NOTE: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.

  • The system may be unstable. Place the system on a flat, stable surface and do not allow it to shake or vibrate.

  • When playing a DVD video on the PlayStation 2, connect the system directly to the TV. If the video signal from the PlayStation 2 has to go through the VCR to get to the TV, the copy protection on some DVD videos could affect picture quality. Click hereto see PlayStation 2 installation for help with set up.

  • The aspect ratio might be incorrect: The aspect ratio cannot be changed when playing wide picture DVD videos. On some discs, the aspect ratio cannot be changed. On some TVs, the aspect ratio cannot be changed.

  • Do not connect a selector or receiver (amplifier) between the PlayStation 2 and the TV. Make sure the PlayStation®2 is connected directly to the TV.

Check your Environment

Make sure to keep the PlayStation 2 system away from excessive dust, smoke, steam, extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight. Full details on Safety Precautions and Use and Handling can be found in the PlayStation 2 Instruction Manual (30000-50000 series, 70000-90000 series).
