User Account

Your User account is the local account you use to access your PlayStation 3. Every time you use your PS3 system, you use your User account.

Sony Entertainment Network account

Your Sony Entertainment Network account is what you use when accessing the PlayStation Network. It can be either a Master Account or Sub Account. You only need a Sony Entertainment Network account if you want to access the PlayStation Network. You do not need a Sony Entertainment Network account if you are just using your PS3 locally.

Note: You must associate your Sony Entertainment Network account with an User account in order to use it on the PlayStation 3. By accessing your Sony Entertainment Network account while logged into a particular User account, the PS3 will automatically associate that Sony Entertainment Network account to that User. However, a Sony Entertainment Network account may not be associated with more than one User account on a PlayStation 3.

If you the message "You cannot connect with another User account." this means that the User is already associated with another SEN account. On the XMB, go to [Users] > [Create New User] and create a new User and sign in with the SEN account you wish to use.
