[PS3™ system] Updated 05/06/2013

When you download games, movies, add-ons, etc. from the PlayStation®Store, your system needs to be activated with your Sony Entertainment Network account. Additionally, each system used to download from the PlayStation®Store will also need to be activated with your Sony Entertainment Network account. In most cases, the system is activated automatically when content is downloaded.


The PS3 can only be activated on the PS3 system you wish to use.

Text Instructions

  1. On the XMB, go to PlayStation Network icon(PlayStation®Network) > Sign In PSN icon(Sign In) to sign in to your Sony Entertainment Network account.

  2. Highlight Account Management icon(Account Management) and press the X button iconbutton.

  3. Highlight System Activation icon (System Activation) and press the X button iconbutton.

  4. Highlight [PS3 System] and press the X button iconbutton.

  5. Select either "Game" or "Video" for the type of content you wish to download onto your PS3 system.

  6. Select "Activate" if you want to activate your system or "Deactivate" to deactivate your system.

  7. You will receive a confirmation message indicating the process was complete.



Maximum Number of Systems


There is a maximum number of systems that can be activated with one account which differs depending on the content.


For purchased/downloaded content before November 17, 2011 the number of systems for activation is:

  • For Game Content - Five (5) PS3 and/or PSP systems

  • For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) PSP systems


As of November 18, 2011, number of systems for activation is:

  • For Game Content - Two (2) PS3 and/or PSP systems

  • For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) PSP systems


If you exceed this amount, you will need to deactivate a system before the new one can be used to download content. You must also have the system with you in order to activate or deactivate it.
