PS Vita Cannot Find Location or Finds Wrong Location using Google Maps or near

There may be situations where you are having problems using your PS Vita with location Services, like near or Google Maps. If this is the case, please use the troubleshooting below.

What type of PS Vita are you using?


When using a Wi-Fi model
When using a 3G/Wi-Fi model

 

When using a Wi-Fi model

You will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi access point to use Wi-Fi data. Click HERE for more information

    To enable Wi-Fi:
  1. Go To (Settings) > [Network] > [Wi-Fi Settings] and place a check the Wi-Fi box.
  2. No GPS settings are required.
    • GPS information is based on your PS Vita's clock, so please make sure this is set to the correct time and time zone.
    • GPS signals can be blocked if you are indoors. Being outside in a open area will allow you to get better GPS signals.

    Other Notes about Location Services

  • It may take several minutes to find your location when using a service for the first time
  • Note that each application has different requirements and options that you may need to complete before you can use the service.
  • Example: You cannot use Google Maps if you don't have a Wi-Fi data connection, because you have to download the map itself.
  • Once you've initially found your location, it will be easier to find your location the next time.
  • GPS information is the same regardless of the application
  • The GPS feature is not off even if you turn off mobile network communication.

When using a 3G/Wi-Fi model

The 3G/Wi-Fi model obtains location data based on data from detected Wi-Fi access points, GPS satellites, and mobile phone base stations (3G).

You will get the most accurate location information when your PS Vita is using all three technologies to find your current location. We recommend that you make sure ALL 3 are being used by the PS Vita by following the instructions below:

  1. Go To (Settings) > [Network] > [Mobile Network Settings] and place a check the Wi-Fi box.
  2. You will need to have a DataConnect session with available data from AT&T to use Mobile Network. Click HERE to find out how to purchase an AT&T DataConnect session.

  3. Go To (Settings) > [Network] > [Wi-Fi Settings] and place a check the Wi-Fi box.
  4. You will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi access point to use Wi-Fi data. Click HERE to find out how to purchase an AT&T DataConnect session.

  5. No GPS settings are required.

The Internet connection that your ISP provides may be originating from non-local site.

You can increase the accuracy of your location data by registering your router's MAC address with the Skyhook, a location services company.

Skyhook's Wi-Fi location service finds a location to by linking "access points" and "access point locations," which are registered in Skyhook's database. Any access point with a known MAC address and physical location can be registered in Skyhook's database.

    To register a location and MAC address in the Skyhook:
  1. Go to www.skyhookwireless.com
  2. Click on the SONY VITA USERS link.

  4. Select Submit a Wi-Fi Access Point.

  6. Enter your address or location
  7. image
  8. Enter your router's MAC address (there is a link to help you find it.

  10. Enter your email, complete the Captcha, and click Submit

Note that it may take up to 7 days for the location to be mapped into Skyhook's database.
