[PlayStation®Vita] Updated 02/13/2014

The following PS3 features can be operated using remote play:

  • Settings (only some features)
  • Photo (only some features)
  • Music
  • Video (Cannot play "Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Also, video files that are copyright protected cannot be played.)
  • Game (only some titles)
  • Network
  • PlayStation Network (only some features)
  • Friends



 

The PS Vita can connect to the PlayStation 3 in three different ways. Click your desired connection method to learn more.


 

 

Remote play in a private network (using the PS3 ’s Wi-Fi network)

If the PS3 has Wi-Fi network capability, you can connect your PS Vita and the PS3 directly using the Wi-Fi network capabilities of both systems.

Preparing for first-time use: Registering your PS Vita with the PS3

Note: Perform this procedure with your PS Vita near the PS3.

  1. On the PS3, select  (Settings) > [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device] > [PS Vita ].
    A number appears on the screen.
  2. On your PS Vita, tap  (Remote Play) > [Start] > [Next].
  3.  Enter the number displayed on the PS3’s screen, and then tap [Register]. When the devices connect successfully, a message indicating that the registration is complete appears.
  4. Select [OK] on the PS3 .

Playing remotely

You can play remotely within the range where your PS Vita can communicate with the PS3’s Wi-Fi network. Use your PS Vita close enough to the PS3 for good signal reception.

  1. On your PS Vita , tap  (Remote Play) > [Start]. When using Remote Play for the first time, a message informs you that it is necessary to register your PS Vita with the PS3. If you see this message, perform the registration.
  2. On the PS3, select  (Network) >  (Remote Play). The PS3 will wait for the PS Vita to establish the remote play connection.
  3. On your PS Vita , tap [Connect via Private Network]. When the devices connect successfully, the PS3 ’s screen appears on your PS Vita .


Notes:

  • If you enable remote start on the PS3 , you can use remote play when the PS3 is in standby mode. For details, see  (Settings) > [Remote Play Settings] > [Remote Start] in the PS3’s user’s guide.
  • When you are playing remotely using the Wi-Fi network of the PS3 you cannot connect to the Internet on your PS Vita.
  • During remote play, if you go to the screen for a different application, the remote play connection is closed after 30 seconds.



 

 

Remote play in a private network (using home Wi-Fi network)

Connect the PS3 to an access point using a LAN cable. Your PS Vita uses a Wi-Fi connection to the wireless access point or router to connect to the PS3.

Example of a typical connection scheme:

A ) Wireless access point or a wireless router
B ) Cable modem or DSL modem
C ) Connection to the Internet
D ) LAN (Ethernet) cable
E ) Computer


Registering your PS Vita with the PS3


Note: Perform this procedure with your PS Vita near the access point.

  1. On the PS3, select  (Settings) > [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device] > [PS Vita]. A number appears on the screen.
  2. On your PS Vita, tap  (Remote Play) > [Start] > [Next].
  3. Enter the number displayed on the PS3’s screen, and then tap [Register]. When the devices connect successfully, a message indicating that the registration is complete appears. If the Wi-Fi Settings screen appears, select the access point that is connected to the PS3.
  4. Select [OK] on the PS3.

Playing remotely

You can play remotely where your PS Vita is within range of your home Wi-Fi network.

  1. On your PS Vita, tap  (Remote Play) > [Start]. When using Remote Play for the first time, a message informs you that it is necessary to register your PS Vita with the PS3. If you see this message, perform the registration.
  2. On the PS3, select  (Network) >  (Remote Play). The PS3 waits for the PS Vita to establish the remote play connection.
  3. On your PS Vita, tap [Connect via Private Network]. When the devices connect successfully, the PS3’s screen appears on your PS Vita.

Notes:
If the Wi-Fi Settings screen appears, select the access point that is connected to the PS3.
If you enable remote start on the PS3, you can use remote play when the PS3 is in standby mode. For details, see  (Settings) > [Remote Play Settings] > [Remote Start] in the PS3’s user’s guide.
During remote play, if you go to the screen for a different application, the remote play connection is closed after 30 seconds.



 

 

Remote play using an Internet connection (away from home)

You can use the Remote Play application when you are away from home and even when you are overseas.

A ) PS3 that is connected to the Internet

E ) PS Vita connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi


Note: You may not be able to use remote play via the Internet in some network environments. For details, see  (Network)>  (Remote Play) > [Use Remote Play (via Internet)] in the PS3’s user’s guide.


Preparing for first-time use


Before using remote play via the Internet, do the following:

  • Link the PS3 and your PS Vita to the same Sony EntertainmentNetwork account.
  • If you created an account on the PS3 or a computer, you can use that account on your PS Vita.
  • When using an access point provided by a commercial or public Wi-Fi service, or by a private wireless network, set up your PS Vita so that it can connect to that access point.


Registering your PS Vita  with the PS3

Note: Perform this procedure with your PS Vita near the PS3 or the access point.

1. On the PS3, select  (Settings) > [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device] > [PS Vita].
A number appears on the screen.
2. On your PS Vita, tap  (Remote Play) > [Start] > [Next].
3. Enter the number displayed on the PS3’s screen, and then tap [Register]. When the devices connect successfully, a message indicating that the registration is complete appears.
4. Select [OK] on the PS3.

Playing remotely

To use remote play via the Internet from outside your home, you must first put the PS3 into remote play connection mode:

  1. Sign in to PlayStation Network on the PS3, using the same account to which your PS Vita is linked.
  2. Select  (Network) >  (Remote Play) to put the PS3 into remote play connection mode.
  3. On your PS Vita, tap  (Remote Play) > [Start]. When using Remote Play for the first time, a message informs you that it is necessary to register your PS Vita with the PS3. If you see this message, perform the registration..
  4. Tap [Connect via Internet]. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the operation. When the devices connect successfully, the PS3  screen appears on your PS Vita.

Notes:
