[PS3™ system] Updated 05/06/2013

Use the PlayStation 3 system's audio output settings to adjust audio playback when connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems. The PlayStation 3 system will support audio technology such as Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch., DTS 5.1 Ch., LPCM 7.1 Ch., AAC, and others.

Configuring Audio Output Settings for the PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 system allows you to configure the audio output settings independent of the display output settings. You may need to make sure the correct audio out setting is selected for your installation. To configure the audio output settings:

  1. Confirm the formats supported by your audio device. Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.

  2. Go to Settings icon(Settings) > Sound Settings icon(Sound Settings) and press the X button iconbutton in the XMB™ home menu on the PlayStation 3.

  3. Highlight [Audio Output Settings] and press the X button iconbutton.

  4. Select the input connector on the audio device (TV or AV amplifier / receiver) from the following options:
Note: Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.
    • HDMI

      - Output connector: HDMI OUT connector
      - Output channel(s): 2 Ch., 5.1 Ch., 7.1 Ch.*
      * To output in 7.1 channel surround sound, the audio must be outputted via the HDMI port on the PlayStation 3 and connected a display or AV amplifier (receiver) that is compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format. With system software version 2.30 or greater, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio output is now supported.
    • Digital Out (Optical)

      - Output connector: Digital Out (Optical) connector
      - Output channel(s): 2 Ch., 5.1 Ch
Note: To utilize the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) feature of the PlayStation 3 system, you should plug in the "Video" connectors only (yellow if using Composite AV Cables; red, green and blue if using Component AV Cables). You should also disconnect the Left and Right Audio (white and red) connectors that may be installed into your television/stereo. Every setup can vary depending upon the make and model of your equipment, so there may be exceptions to this. One such example would be when you may be using an RFU adapter to relay the video and sound information to the television.
    • Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI

  5. Your next step will depend on your choice of output port:
    • HDMI

If you selected [HDMI], you will be given the option to choose [Automatic] or [Manual].
Note: If you are uncertain what to choose, please consult the manufacturer of your home theater equipment for additional assistance.
      • Automatic
The PlayStation 3 will automatically choose the method for setting the audio output format. To select, highlight [Automatic] and press the right direction button.
      • Manual
You are able to manually choose the audio output formats supported by your display or AV amplifier (receiver). To select, highlight the audio output option and press the X button iconbutton on the option you wish to use and make sure the check box is checked. Once you are done, press the right direction button.

    • Digital Out (Optical)

Note: If you are uncertain what to choose, please consult the manufacturer of your home theater equipment for additional assistance.
If you selected [Digital Out (Optical)], you will be given the option to select the output format supported by the display or AV amplifier (receiver). Highlight the options and press the X button iconbutton and make sure the check box is checked. Once you are done, press the right direction button.
    • Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI
If you selected [Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI], the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed and you will move directly to the next step.

  6. Once you are done, a summary of the audio outputs will be displayed. Press the X button iconbutton to save this setting.

  7. The audio output of the PlayStation 3 system will now output audio from the port you have selected using the selected settings.

Audio output format

Additionally, the audio output format for certain Blu-ray Discs™ or DVD media may be specified depending on your display or AV amplifier(receiver).

  1. In the XMB™ home menu, go to Settings icon(Settings) > [BD/DVD Settings]

  2. Your next step will depend on your selected output port:
    • HDMI
If the audio output is coming from the HDMI port, select [BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)]

    • Digital Out (Optical)
If audio output is coming from the Digital Optical Out port, select [BD/DVD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)].

  3. You will be able to choose between [Bitstream] or [Linear PCM]. Contact the manufacturer of your display or AV amplifier (receiver) to determine what your display or AV amplifier (receiver) supports.

For Blu-ray discs that can output in Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio you must select Linear PCM as the Audio Output. Please note that your AV amplifier (receiver) must support Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio.

Audio Multi-output

The PlayStation 3 can output sound simultaneously from the HDMI OUT connector, the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connector, and the AV MULTI OUT connector. This is done with the [Audio Multi-Output] option found in Settings icon (Settings)>Sound Settings icon (Sound Settings).

Available with system software 3.00 or later.

  • Off: Disable the multi-output feature.
  • On: Enable the multi-output feature.

When the multi-output feature is enabled, the following conditions will occur:

  • Audio output to connectors that are not selected in Settings icon(Settings)>Sound Settings icon(Sound Settings)>[Audio Output Settings] is downscaled to 2 channels.
  • If you select [HDMI] in Settings icon(Settings)>Sound Settings icon(Sound Settings)>[Audio Output Settings], audio will be output from the HDMI OUT connector with the following restrictions:
    • Audio in Linear PCM format can only be output up to 5.1 ch, 44.1/48 kHz.
    • Even if [Audio Multi-Output] is set to [On] on a CECH-2000 series system, bitstream audio recorded in Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus or DTS-HD format cannot be output on the system.
  • If you select [Optical Digital] in Settings icon(Settings)>Sound Settings icon(Sound Settings)>[Audio Output Settings], audio will be output from the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connector with the following restriction:
    • Audio in Linear PCM format can only be output up to 44.1/48 kHz.
